Katy Grannan- Boulevards

Published in honor of Grannan's recent exhibition at Fraenkel Gallery in San Francisco and her current exhibit this March in New York, this over-sized monograph of photographs represent Grannan's series "Boulevard." Although these portraits are all titled "Anonymous", the subjects are anything but. Each character is teeming with individuality and distinct peculiarities. Set behind a white stucco wall with what seems to be natural Californian light, the portraits involve all the elements of cinematic fiction; stage, prop, costume. But it is difficult to determine whether the players in these portraits were staged by Grannan or were truly selected by her off the boulevard. This dynamic creates an enticing collection of portraits that are as strange as they are beautiful.
