The Age of Adolescence, Joseph Sterling Photography 1959-1964
The Age of Adolescence: Joseph Sterling Photographs 1959-1964. Greybull Press, 2005. Hard Cover. 133 pages. First Edition, Excellent Condition, Missing Case. With a supplemental soft-cover essay by Keith Davis with accompanying images by Sterling. The Age of Adolescence was Joseph Sterling's graduate thesis project at the Institute of Design in Chicago. Sterling's black and white photographs of youth offer a range of honest, voyeuristic and cinematic moments of a transient age during a transient time in American culture. Sterling's overwhelming shyness, as he describes in the included text, meant that his shots were often from the back, or from unobserved locations. The result is his almost cinema-verite style that caught teenagers in moments of expression, movement and thought. The size and quality of the reproductions in this first edition do justice to Sterling's talent, and would be a great addition to any photography book collection. You might also be interested in...
