1952 George Nelson Pretzel Chair
The "Pretzel Chair," designed by George Nelson in 1952 and produced in 1957/58, was originally simply called the laminated chair. There were very few laminated chairs actually produced—perhaps a hundred—making them extremely collectible. This one appears to be in excellent original condition: the chair is sturdy, the birch has a warm golden tone, the bentwood is smooth and intact (there is a repair of a hairline fracture on one of the legs on the base, which doesn't affect the chair's structural integrity or its aesthetic appeal), and there's nothing to mar the visual excitement of the provocative "pretzel" shapes of the back and legs. The subtle curves of the crest rail and the downward curved tapering of the legs are what make this chair so appealing, and also what ultimately made it too expensive to mass produce in 1958.
